The power in hands of mass-Nokia E5-Unboxing and first impressions

Sir! you got a parcel” – I got a call from the security in-charge of our office and I knew that it came.

27112010761

It would be wrong to say that I was not expecting the same. Great people at @WomWorldNokia and DHL both are transparent in their operations and being in New Delhi always come as advantage because I never had to wait for more than 4 days, once WomWorld people give it a go.

Happy to see a review unit back in house after a little pause. Thanks WOM people, thanks again.

This time, I thought to ask my friend Krishna to come up, so that I could get a fresh hand opinion from someone else as well. So, all the back ground stuff ends here …

So this was the shiny and slim blue box, we got for Nokia E5-00 and this time it was a white one. So it was the second white device to me in a row after Nokia N86.

27112010750 27112010756

After opening the box, I was greeted with the regular Nokia Accessories with white Nokia E5-00 taking the middle place.

27112010758

If you go by the specs, then a 600 MHz processor with 256 MB RAM that too with such a nice QWERTY, so reliable S60 V3 FP2 OS and an extended battery life with 1200 mAh battery sure deserves a price. Still for keeping the prices down, I was not expecting much of the goodies inside the box.

28112010786

Again that small tiny USB cable. I bet no other manufacturer would have been shipping such small cable. Oh! Com’on Nokia, it wouldn’t kill you if you keep on shipping those longer length USB cables.

28112010781

Matching with the colors of the device, we got the white stereo headsets as well, though for a surprise, those adjustable ear buds are not included in the package. May be price compromise. Fine with it.

28112010789 28112010791

The charger was a UK one (Indian package would be different), but with a socket as well.

When taken out of the box, the white color was a real piece of beauty for my surprise otherwise, I always been a fan of Black/ Dark Gray devices due to rough nature of my work most of the time.

28112010779* Obviously the pics was taken after setting it up but this was a beauty, isn’t it?

28112010818

The front of the device has a nice speaker in front top and a light sensor at its usual place.

28112010817

At the bottom, there is a tiny microphone and obviously none of you might be asking for some noise cancellation second microphone here considering the price of the device that is around 11.3k INR.

A richer and comfortable QWERTY with a longer space key in the middle and a metal plate featuring six buttons namely Left and Right Selection Keys in first row, Home keys and Messaging key in second row and finally Call key and End\ Power key in last row.

28112010795

I am trying to avoid the comparison, but let me mention few differences between Nokia E72 and this one. For me almost all of them been very positives.

  1. It removes Calendar and Contacts buttons (I wasn’t using them much in Nokia E72 either)
  2. It brings green and red colors to Call and End Call keys, which were plain in Nokia E72.
  3. It brings extra width for space key

If we rest of the device, then Nokia seems to have taken a very minimalistic approach in design.

 2811201081528112010811

Not many buttons are around and as we already have seen power key been already merged with the Call End key (though I Haven’t been favour of this compromise, but its about habit only). There are two plastic buttons on the sides, which pushes the battery cover out, when pressed. There is no camera/ Gallery buttons neither many would have preferred so for not camera centric device. The Navi Key works as a Camera button as well.

28112010812

Upper portion has the volume key on the right side, for which I will say that the feedback could have been better as current one feels a bit extra tougher.

2811201081301122010047

While there is nothing on the curvy bottom side, the top has the 2mm power jack, 3.5mm headset jack and one MicroUSB port covered with a plastic cap. Did I told you earlier that I always preferred devices without the plastic cover as such caps are always susceptible to be broken, but still I understand that many wants this to be in place as well.

28112010808 28112010807

The back of device features the 5MP Full Focus Camera, a single LED flash (works as video light too) and a stereo speaker. Though I would have argued over the placing of speakers on the back, but the volume is such crisp that I still doesn’t mind it. We also find Nokia E5-00 engraved at the bottom of battery cover, that’s cute.

2711201076030112010035

The same 1200 mAh battery that I criticize up to some extent in Nokia N8-00 and E7-00, I seems to be loving in Nokia E5-00 for sure. You can really really rely on this device for the whole day and night too.

30112010033

And may be many don’t stress over it, but for me placing of SIM slot always been important. We got exactly the same SIM slot as was there in Nokia N82 means no scratches over the SIM or struggling to put it right at first instance.

28112010800

While there are many arguments over the Full Focus cameras, but one thing is sure. Some casual snappers seems to be even liking it as I took opinion of some. No wait for getting focus right and you just have to keep the hands straight while taking pictures. Unbelievable for me, but many seems to be liking it. By the way, being a S60 V3 FP2 device, it also has advantage of having panorama mode inbuilt in camera.

30112010014

Some of the random shots in day light

28112010006 28112010004

And in night light. Yeah I will post Flash reactions later on.

30112010019

And at the end, let me tell you guys, just for sake of getting exact feeling of Nokia E5-00, I am keeping my Nokia N8-00 as retired and Nokia E5-00 has taken the driver seat. You know its not an easy job, is it?

28112010006

So, these were some of my first impressions on Nokia E5-00. All I can say is, this is a brilliant piece of hardware in a superb and very very well justified price. A device that you could live with for sure and still never regret like you never regretted with most of the E-Series devices.

You should expect some more coming in next coming days. Be tuned in ….

Are you waiting to buy Nokia E5 over Nokia E72? Think again

[tweetmeme source=”nkumar_” only_single=”false”]

It got many people excited when Nokia announced arrival of many cheap devices back in mid april. Nokia C3, C6 and E5. Nokia E5 was something people were most excited about and even me. I am sure that there are many, who waited this much long for E5 and pushed the purchase of E72. But when the dust gets settled, its time to analyze that how much it really is worth to wait for Nokia E5 over Nokia E72.

Call it success stories behind Nokia E71 and Nokia E72 due to probably best qwerty out there with best battery lives or the professional looks, but people still waiting for Nokia E5 to arrive in cost of 12k INR (as announced), which still stands decent 4.5k INR or around $100 below Nokia E72. But the question to ask is, if this wait worth?

Thanks to Forum Nokia, one could take a closer look over finer prints behind the specifications.

Lets see, where Nokia E5 looses points against Nokia E72 big time …

e5 Nokia-E72-Review

Design: It was a challenge to make a device in a lower budget keeping all the good points intact and one should praise the Nokia design team for keeping the same layout of qwerty. As I’d mentioned in my earlier post, it was more innovative to give colors to call end and receive buttons rather than keeping it strictly white as in E71 or E72 (business people don’t like colors?).

Now what have we lost in comparison to E72 here?

We lost that shiny metal surrounding the body, which was the core attraction of the Nokia E72. Also,, but the dimensions got bulkier. Nokia E72 had a 114 x 58.3 x 10.1 mm, while the Nokia E5 came up with 115 x 58.9 x 12.8 mm. Thanks to Nokia, that back cover is still metallic (plastic back covers scares me), but the extra plasticy bulk sure  doesn’t interest the user, who might have had his hands on Nokia E72.

nokiae5keypadright

More of it, we are back to D-Pad like Nokia E71 (already 13k nowadays) rather than the optical navi-wheel which was one of the biggest attractions to the E72. People who use Blackberry and cry after a year because of its bullshit trackball will surely understand  the losses.

Nokia E5 is sure 2g lighter than Nokia E72 (126g in place 128g), but absence of metal justifies that and don’t forget volume of Nokia E5 is 75cc, when that of Nokia E72 was just 65cc.

Display: Business devices till now, never been known for the great resolutions. Reason is, the focus always been on the text reading, which is crispier on a resolution of 320×240 only rather than bigger resolutions, so been a standard always. Same is here in Nokia E5 and Nokia E72, then what’s the catch?

A resolution is not only about the pixels, but also about the color depth. While with 24 bit colors, Nokia E72 was on the par with best of the devices, Nokia E5 took a step back with 16 bit colors means not those 16m color, but only 65000. If only these numbers doesn’t lower your excitement about E5, then next is the transmissive screen in place of transflective screen of Nokia E72, which was known to perform much better in sunlight, while E5 will go blank.

Connectivity, processor, RAM, Memory: Good thing about Nokia E5 is in this section, where its neck to neck with Nokia E72, at least as it seems on paper. It would be more reasonable to compare, when the actual unit will be in my hands, but still it got exactly same processor, exactly same level of all around connectivity.

What’s a win for Nokia E5 here is

With Nokia E5, we enjoys doubled RAM that is 256 MB now in place of 128 MB of Nokia E72. Sure one could expect this thing to be snappy when Nokia E72 was never a let down in performance. The reason for bigger RAM might be integration of Social services in contacts and home screen widgets, but the more RAM means more advantage for sure. Next is the support of 32GB memory card while Nokia E72 supported a MAX of 16 GB only.

While business people wont care much about extra 16 GB support as both the devices are never big about media playback and video recording, but sure 256 MB RAM makes a better deal for Nokia E5.

Note that without the extra RAM, I don’t think that better social integration as in Nokia E5 ever coming to Nokia E72, even if people kept asking for. Remember Nokia 5800, which never got the home screen widgets.

Battery: May be I never exactly got that how mAh works otherwise, I could have got some idea that how a 1200 mAh battery is being told to perform better (even if with minor margin) than a 1500 mAh. Though the improvements are minor in terms of talk time, which already at a great level of 13 hours straight in Nokia E72, but battery utilizations is greatly enhanced in case standby battery life, where it stands on 26 days in place of 16 days of Nokia E72.

I guess standby time doesn’t matter that much (at least doesn’t make a difference or me at all), but it would be interesting to see with actual unit that if the claims stand right with a 1200 mAh battery. If they have implemented some good things in their firmware, then those improvements may do more wonder with God battery of 1500 mAh in Nokia E72.

And yes!! both the devices have USB charging as well as 2mm port. Did I told you that I hate only USB charging option as was in Nokia N86?

Camera: Nokia E71 was one of legend from Nokia and people loved Nokia E72 for the reason that it brings fun to Business people as well. One of the biggest attraction was the competitive 5MP camera, biggest in Business phones. With Autofocus and LED flash, it was able to serve you not only for personal needs, but was serving you a good macro mode to get snap fine print on business papers due to its sensor that works from 10cm to infinity. But when you look over E5, then probably in cutting cost, Nokia forgotten that why people loved a 5MP camera.

nokiae5backpanel

Camera on Nokia E5 may be a 5MP, but its a camera of lower focal length 3.3 mm than that of Nokia E72 on 4.7 mm and aperture stands at f/2.4 as usual for Full focus camera in comparison to f/2.8 of Nokia E72.

Nokia E5 has just a full focus, which means 50 cm to infinity, no macro mode therefore. Not only that but with Nokia E5, if I am right, then you will be missing the still image editor as well (though I don’t believe on it, but their official forum page says so).Video and Still digital zoom will be reduced to 4x with Nokia E5, which were at 5x in Nokia E72.

Do you think that its enough to blow the excitement around Nokia E5? Here comes more ..

Nokia E5 doesn’t has a secondary camera. So forget about the video calling and those business video meetings. Sorry

Extra features: Sure cutting the price takes its toll and manufacturers try to cut it from where its least visible or may have a direct impact.

Did you knew that you are going to miss Compass (Magnetometer Sensor) and accelerometer in Nokia E5? Not only that but you miss Line Printer Daemon Protocol, Print to file option, Lotus Notes Traveller, stereo FRM radio with RDS (just a plain FM radio here in Nokia E5) and Bass Boost.

Sure, Nokia E5 might not be all, like you felt with Nokia E72. Yes!! it brings the same solid feel and performance to people, who didn’t wished to cross the 12k INR mark ever, but don’t you think that it was more worth loosing a better camera, a secondary camera, 24 bit screen, Compass (magnetometer), Accelerometer, optical navi wheel and metallic slim body for doubled RAM, better software and 4.5k INR?

Nokia E72 Black/ Chrome stands on 16.5k or less as of now and majesty white Nokia E72 now available in India for 17.5k. What you say?

Update: Make sure not to miss my full review on Nokia E5-00 for some of the great pictures and details about Nokia E5-00.

Update: The always great review from All About Symbian again adds up the confusion about E5 as the screen is sure not a good compromise, but snaps didn’t looked that bad and if people could live with a dull screen in daylights, then the recent video of multitasking, addition of more 128 mb RAM is more than enough tempting for making people buy it.

We will keep on crying that why it’s late or why Nokia doesn’t come up with E6 with same features as Nokia E72 without compromise, a better camera, 256 MB RAM at least, may be Bluetooth 3.0, USB OTG, but still will end up buying Nokia E5. Yes! it will make many happy to get a powerful thing in such a price, but still …

I must say that I tried to put an end over the confusions around Nokia E5, but it breaks on…

Nokia C3, Nokia C6, Nokia E5-What you always wished for

[tweetmeme source=”mrnitishkumar” only_single=”false”]

Add to Google Buzz

It was just last day, when I wrote over the invitation received from WomWorld. I was wondering that what it will reveal? Why the card was required to sent in place of a simple email? Wished if they could do that integration of IMs again the way they did in Nokia N900? Was thinking about the price on which the new device will come? Was thinking that if they will be worth thinking about? Will they be touch devices again? Are we going to see the first MeeGo? Is the most rumored N-8 is about to unveil?

Lots of questions and answer was just …. Wait!!!! speculations all around .. even if myself and many got the bit that it has to do something with Nokia Messaging and IMs, but still wait was wait..

I really never took part into such an online event and unfortunately even today wasn’t available due to loads of work, but even sneak peak was enough to excite and I was waiting to reach home to write upon it. And here I am …

What was that invitation card about? We have seen many type of campaigns, remember those empty banners saying something is coming… advertising needs lots of creativity and sometimes with so simple ideas. So was the invitation card. Yes!!! I am smiling when writing that the black backside of the card was really cryptic and of actual worth.

There was a screen on the site, which presented a flash based app asking for allowing to access your webcam and then asking to show your card from backside.

 3d

Nothing happened …. ??? Now move the card a bit …. unveiling the new device in front of you … amazing…

Yes!!.. Nokia really unveiled the next gen of messaging and more exciting the way it got everything right either it be price or battery life or connections or apps coz only that thing matters more than anything about the real connections. I am just left thinking about my old post on what a dream phone should be like? What should Nokia give a thought? And I am really really overwhelmed that its like getting prayers heard. I am still fascinated that how much of my thoughts coincided. Nokia unveils three new dream devices centered around Nokia Messaging and Social connections.

devicesnokiaaa

Yes… not only Nokia N900 like IM integrations and conversational approach will be common to all three of them, but all are having qwerty keypad, WLAN and heavy batteries > 1200 mAh. It really seems that Nokia getting things perfectly right and taking the best elements of its own experience from all of its successful devices rather than thinking about wide spread fever around Touch-Phones.

Let me Introduce the device one by one ….

Nokia C3 Series 40 devices.. like the one I had Nokia 5310. Many loved them due to their price and C3 functionality. It was not for those people, who are very much concerned about browsing over phones, but wish to have cool camera/ music phones in hands with best talk-time.

Nokia C3 represents the same class. You get connectivity with Gtalk, Yahoo, Live Messenger and Ovi chat, conversational view, One click access to mail via Nokia Messaging (Graduated from beta), favorite contacts on home screen, just like you seen in Nokia N97 etc, easy updates/ uploads to Facebook, Twitter etc, Wireless Lan with easy access point authentication (No 3G though), 2 MP Camera, 3.5 AV connector, FM Stereo Radio, 55 MB internal memory (more than enough for Series 40), though no memory card included but supports up to 8 GB and amazing 1320 mAh battery with 7 hours talk time.

Though searching over web didn’t confirmed me about the processor, but it seems that it would offer 64 MB RAM and 128 NAND ROM. Enough for a Series 40 na????

Could find the official specifications here

Now the best part of the deal. What’s the price? 90 Euro before taxes means should stand somewhere Rs. 5, 500/- or Rs. 6, 000/- if I am right about conversion rates.

I know you cant believe it.. but the world is sure going to change and the ruler is back. Really will be interesting to see if it returns back the era of non-touch phones. And don’t run to Nokia Priority shops, it’s scheduled to be released in Q2 means somewhere around June/ July 2010.

Nokia C6 Do you think that something holding you back, when you take a Series 40 device in your hands? Do nokia_c6 you think that a Series 40 device is made for only school going teenagers? Do you think that you can’t live without latest Symbian 9? You think that it would be like living in some village without the cool apps you had in your N82, N97? You still don’t want to loose the grip with touch device. Nokia still with you 🙂

Nokia C6 represents surprisingly the only touch device among these three next gen messaging devices. Nokia N97 like full keypad, Nokia 5800 like screen, full Email support for Gmail, Yahoo, Live Mail, Ovi Mail, IM client available from Ovi Store for Gtalk, Live Messenger, Yahoo or Ovi Chat. Almost exactly same or better customizable home screen than Nokia N97. What more you could wish for?

Here comes more … nHD 16:9, 640x 360, 3.2” TFT screen with 16M colors, 5MP primary camera with Integrated Led Flash, secondary front camera for video calling, FM Stereo Radio, feee ovi maps voice navigation with Integrated A-GPS (No compass though), WLAN, 3G, 200  MB Internal Memory, 2 GB Card included and supports up to 16GB, Micro USB Connector (Not sure that it could be charged through the same or not) and the amazing 7 hours talk time with 1200 mAh battery, What else you wished for?? Really pushes N97 way behind. rocessor will be the same as Nokia 5800, 434 MHz ARM11 and will feature 128 MB RAM

Could find the official specifications here

Again the best part of deal. Nokia really got the point right what I mentioned in my Nokia 5800 post and my dream phone post. The price is highest among the three but still just 220 Euro means will stand somewhere Rs. 14, 000/- – Rs. 15, 000/- obviously if I am right about conversion rates.

You are really thinking na.. if have already bought Nokia N97 Mini or didn’t bought due to high price or even if you started loving your Nokia 5800 like some die hard. Why Nokia does this? Why their own products stands like best rivals? Its time to enjoy and make fun, for them who waited for better. Yes!! this one is also scheduled to be released in Q2 means somewhere around June/ July 2010.

Nokia E5 Do you think that IMs and Social updates are for only kids and youth? Do you think that  being ae51 professional meant to keep you away from social? Do you think that business phone are made of something else and fun phone of another? You ask that why a strictly professional boss or executive can’t be a active socialite? Yes!! Nokia heard you ..

Nokia E5 brings best of their business phones like E63 and E72. Same qwerty keypad, same long battery life, best 5MP Camera with full focus, best of the connectivity with 10MB upload speed/ 2MB download speed with HSPDA/ HSUPA, favourite contacts with images on home screen, One click IM/ mail clients, support for Microsoft Exchange and Lotus Traveler means covering 90% business mails all over the world and never to miss free Ovi Maps Voice Navigation with Integrated A-GPS Support. Yes!!! this one also packs the same conversational view of IMs/SMS and graduated Nokia Messaging.

You may be disappointed that why business devices still has those 2.4 “ QVGA LCD 320×240 as this one has, but 250 MB Internal memory and support for 32 GB card (2GB included) really come to blow your mind. Here comes Nokia to take you in wonderland, the talk time of 18 hours 30 mins on GSM. Really some trick behind this as its still 5 hours and 30 mins on 3G and battery is BL-4D 1200 mAh. Really wish to know details behind this GSM optimizations. But its amazing for people, who finds them travelling most of the time. This really seems unbelievable when you know that it features the same processor earlier Nokia N900 & Nokia E72 and more of RAM will be 256 MB. Great!!!! Superb!!! Really making me restless …

Oh!!! you are waiting for the price na… here it comes … 180 Euro before taxes means somewhere Rs. 12, 500/- or Rs. 13, 000/- I guess. Same price as Nokia 5800. I really love this price tag. The next few month will be hard as this device is not gonna released in Q2, but Q3 means in September/ October I think. Let’s see when it will make it to India. I hope very soon.

I was already impressed with Nokia E72 and it was being loved all over the world… its like overkill. I love you Nokia. Anyone still holding BlackBerry?

For me, the announcement came like a dream came true and Nokia seemed to be like some Santa giving all my wishes. As Thomos on Engadget wrote, Nokia bringing the best of smart phones in affordable ‘dumb phones’ market. The world is sure about to change. The complaints seem being over now that Smart Phones prices are getting as high that people started thinking about buying Netbook and doing compromises. I always said Smart Phones will realize into connections, when many will hold high end devices … it really about to happen. 🙂

For me, it will be more interesting to watch that how webkit based browser will fare in all of these device and what processors and how much RAM these are going to get as the same is not mentioned in press released but means a lot. Also have to see that if they will release the same IM client for other devices or not? Again … wait not over even now 😦 ….

Paul@WomWorldNokia already assured me that I will be on their mind once they get access to these dream devices. So, I will sure be back with more details, when get one of these in my own hands. Clocks started ticking slow .. 😦
